Future
Our main objective is to help develop the next generation of microfinance leaders. This is a natural extension of the premier position graduates of Columbia’s MBA program hold in traditional financial fields. Through Microlumbia’s influence on current microfinance practitioners we hope to help them become the best leaders and managers they can be for their borrowers and their employees. Through Microlumbia’s influence on the student body we aim to bring students into contact with the power of microfinance as both a tool for development and for wealth generation and hope to influence both their future career goals and philanthropic choices
In the short-term, we plan to develop a strong foundation for Microlumbia by building relationships with microfinance organizations, structuring a corporate framework with integrity and building a strong reputation with our current students and alumni. We are working to meet these goals with the help or our distinguished board of alumni and business leaders, our robust consulting program and our distinguished speaker series.
In the long-term, we hope to maintain a portfolio of small to medium sized microfinance institutions that meet our investment criteria which will allow Microlumbia to continuously reinvest in itself and be free from the demands of seeking additional funding. This framework will allow Microlumbia to locate, evaluate and invest in additional microfinance organizations while learning about the peculiarities of managing a social investment portfolio. In addition it will allow Microlumbia to source, scope and implement a steady stream of consulting projects for less sophisticated microfinance organizations while learning how to manage businesses in the developing world.
